What are your favorite non-racing hobbies?

When I turned 50, I bought a Harley Street Glide. It was my first motorcycle. I knew to wait until I was at least 50 to own a motorcycle, because everything I drive is full-tilt. So I figured I’d be old enough and wise enough by then.

If someone turned on the radio/media player in your car, what would they most likely be listening to?

I’m kind of a freak of nature when it comes to music. I’m all over the place. If you turn my radio on, it could be anywhere from WIZN to 95 Triple X to WOKO. I like the ‘80s and ‘90s music – that’s kind of when I had all my “swag” – and I like listening, going back and thinking about what I was doing back then with those songs in my head. Those were a lot of good times there. But I’m all over the place – I’ll even listen to blues and classical music depending on what mood I’m in. You could probably hit any station on my truck radio scanner and I would listen to it.

What are your favorite non-racing hobbies?

My favorites are hunting white-tail deer and trout fishing. I hunt every deer season, both rifle and muzzle-loading, and I’ve been successful pretty much every year. I classify myself as a decent, better-than-average hunter. I’ve gotten a couple of big bucks – my biggest success was getting a 10-point buck at 212 pounds on Camel’s Hump, along with a big black bear that was 210 pounds. So I’ve joined the 200 Club here in Vermont. But I get deer pretty much every year, whether it’s a doe or a buck if I get a doe permit. I really enjoy it.

Do you have anyone that you consider a role model or that you take after?

I don’t want to be cliché about it, but I really have to say my father. He’s always been family-first, not only for racing, but for everything. He’s been really supportive in everything we do – well, other than the first time I brought home a race car. But he was really trying to look out for our best interests, because he knew how addictive racing was, and it was better for us to go to school, get a good job, and then race later on in life. He’s taught me a lot through life, and I feel a lot of my character is because of him and the directions he’s led me in since I was a little boy.

What are your favorite non-racing hobbies?

My favorite hobby right now would probably be watching my two boys Travis and Jackson with their athletics. Right now we’re in the middle of basketball season. Both of them are three-sport athletes – soccer, basketball, and baseball. It might seem like an odd thing to list as a hobby, but watching those two grow and mature throughout the years – especially Travis, who’s getting ready to graduate from high school – has been a fun thing to be a part of. Watch Travis mature as an athlete, and watching Jackson take the same steps that Travis did at this time of their lives (age 6), is pretty cool. I’ve been putting a lot of time into watching them.

What are your favorite non-racing hobbies?

I coach high school wrestling in the winter at Harwood Union High School. My son Kyle used to wrestle there. I also like riding motorcycles. I try to go out every Sunday during the summer if there’s not a Thunder Road race. And occasionally I go to a casino and play cards.
