Scout Night & Kids Rides for Last Thunder Road Thursday in June

Barre, VT — Ending the month of June, the thunder and lightning of Thunder Road International Speedbowl returns on Thursday, June 30th with the annual four-division Scout Night plus Kids Rides from 4:00 to 4:45pm. The standings in all three championship divisions remain tight while the return from a two-week-off absence for the Road Warriors insures plenty of action throughout the night.

The Maplewood/Irving Oil Late Models are coming off an extreme Double Feature event last Friday with the top four championship chasers separated by just six points. Currently led by super consistent Kyle Pembroke from Montpelier, his Kinney Drugs machine has yet to take down the checkered flag, but Scout Night could provide his first win since July of 2021. Standing in his way is the ultra-competitive rides of Milton’s Scott Dragon and Graniteville’s Stephen Donahue. These two have been on hot streaks with Donahue following up his Memorial Day Classic victory with the Casella make-up win last Friday.  With Hinesburg’s Cooper Bouchard taking the win to end Community College of Vermont night, the equal competition in the Late Model ranks could provide us with a surprise victor come Thursday.

Williston’s Justin Prescott continues to lead the Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tiger standings coming into Thursday, 12-points ahead of Hinesburg’s Derrick Calkins. Perhaps Thunder Road’s most unpredictable division, the Flying Tigers are coming off a week where longtime Vermont driver Rich Lowrey took down his first win of 2022 followed closely by Rookie of the Year leader Kaiden Fisher. Two-time winner Mike MacAskill out of Williamstown is feeling very confident in his throw-back 3VT ride and will certainly be looking to make it a three-time winner on Thursday.

Thunder Road’s largest division in 2022, the rk Miles Street Stocks, have averaged high-twenties car counts so far, leaving victory lane podiums quite the confusing gambling racket on Bud Hill. After Dean Switser Jr. took down the first two wins of the season, mechanical issues have plagued the 16 machine out of Waterford, leaving the door open for Northfield’s James Dopp, All-Time Wins Leader Tommy ‘Thunder’ Smith and newcomer Kyle Gravel. After scuffing up in last week’s Marvin Johnson Memorial race, Taylor Hoar, Jesse Laquerre and Trevor Jaques have all been super competitive and chomping at the bit for their first rk Miles Street Stock win; Thursday may be their time.

The fan favorite Burnett Scrap Metal Road Warriors return this Thursday after a two week break to join in on the Scout Night and Kids Rides program. So far this season, ‘Barbie Boy’ Frank Putney took down the first win in his hot pink ride with Neal Foster of Moretown and Graniteville’s ‘Flyin’ Fred Fleury also standing victorious this season. Perhaps this Thursday it’ll be the constant Taylor Sayers’ 95 machine in Victory Lane or a Jason Kirby or Bill O’Connor battling back after mechanical woes have slowed their early seasons.

Thunder Road continues the 63rd season of stock car racing in Barre, Vermont on Thursday, June 30th with Scout Night and Kids Rides. The Maplewood/Irving Oil Late Models, Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers, rk Miles Street Stocks and Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors will all return to the high banks for the annual Kids Rides tradition from 4:00-4:45pm. Post Time is set for 7:00pm with adult tickets on sale for $15, kids 12 and under for $3 with the Family Four Pack available for $30.
