It All Comes Down to WDEV/Calkins Championship Friday at Thunder Road

Barre, VT — At long last, the 2022 Thunder Road championship season comes down to the end this Friday night, September 9th, with WDEV/Calkins Portable Toilets Night. The final point-counting event for the Maplewood/Irving Oil Late Models, Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers and rk Miles Street Stocks will be chock-full of championship-determining fireworks while the always popular Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors will join the iconic Port-a-Potty Grand Prix to complete one of the most anticipated events of the season.

The King of the Road championship comes down to a 12-point split between the top three. Graniteville’s Christopher Pelkey leads Milton’s Scott Dragon by 10-points while Montpelier-native Kyle Pembroke stands just two points behind Dragon in third. Still mathematically in play are Stephen Donahue and Marcel Gravel, both tied in 4th-place, 37-points behind Pelkey. All the Thunder Road faithful know how fast things can change on the Barre high banks and it’s still anyone’s game on WDEV/Calkins Portable Toilets Night.

After a strong run for Williston’s Justin Prescott and an uncharacteristically poor run for Milton’s Sam Caron, the longtime Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tiger point leader now sits just 14-points ahead of his chief rival in the 44VT. Caron should also keep an eye out for Hinesburg’s Derrick Calkins with the Chittenden County Clash continuing among the top three for the 2022 Flying Tiger track championship. Defending champion Mike Martin has also turned up the wick over the month of August and although 42-points is a longshot, it’s far from impossible for the championship caliber team.

Waterford’s Dean Switser Jr. has felt comfortable with the rk Miles Street Stock point lead for the majority of the season but with the final event looming it’s still far from over. The rk Miles Street Stocks have averaged over 30 cars per event this season, leading to the risk of calamity on every corner of the Thunder Road quarter-mile. Switser’s closest competition is Berlin’s Kyler Davis whose ultra-consistency has kept him quietly in the title hunt all season long. Like Mike Martin, Davis is 42-points behind the leader but crazier things have happened at The Road over the years, just ask anyone up on Bud Hill.

The Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors won’t have points to mull over and ride around for, no. The non-point Warriors will be pedal to the metal each and every lap in search of the win on WDEV/Calkins Portable Toilets night. After ‘Barbie Boy’ Frank Putney took down the win on Labor Day Classic Sunday, everyone’s sights are set on the final win of the regular season, hoping a little luck will hang on as they ride into the special event at White Mountain Motorsports Park on September 18th and the Vermont Milk Bowl on October 2nd.

The Thunder Road 2022 championship season all comes down to this Friday, September 9th with WDEV/Calkins Portable Toilets Championship Night. The Maplewood/Irving Oil Late Model King of the Road will be crowned along with championship ceremonies for the Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers and rk Miles Street Stocks. The Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors complete a full card of championship stock car racing on one of the most important dates on the annual calendar. Full schedule and price will soon be available online at www.thunderroadvt.com/schedule.
